  Nuclear Scanning

X-ray & Diagnostic Ultrasound Consultants Ltd.
offers care in Nuclear Medicine

At XDUCL, we offer some of the most up-to-date nuclear medicine procedures. But what exactly is nuclear medicine? Simply, nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive material called radiotracers or radioisotopes to allow your radiologist to see specific organs, bones or tissues of the body.

While x-rays and CT scans, show your anatomy (structure), nuclear medicine depicts the actual function of different organs. Like X-rays and CT, images are produced which are analyzed by your radiologist.

Although nuclear medicine is primarily used for diagnosis, it is increasingly being used for treating certain conditions.

Here are common ways Nuclear Medicine techniques are used at XDUCL

Nuclear Medicine Diagnostics:

Bone/Skeletal Scans are used to examine the bones of the body for trauma e.g. fractures, inflammation and cancer. Many cancers have a predilection to spread to involve the bones e.g. breast and prostate cancer. The nuclear skeletal scan is vital for determining the degree of spread of these cancers. This information is critical for deciding appropriate therapy.

Lung Scans are employed to detect clots in the pulmonary arteries (the blood vessels of the lungs), which could lead to sudden death if undiagnosed. This condition is called Pulmonary Embolism.

Thyroid Scans are useful in evaluating goiters.

Parathyroid Scans detect and localize abnormalities of the parathyroid gland and facilitates appropriate treatment.

Cardiac Stress & Rest Tests detect areas of the heart muscle where the blood supply is reduced through narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries and enables your doctor to determine whether more sophisticated tests of the coronary arteries are necessary.

Renal Scans are useful for determining the current level of kidney function.

Bleeding Scan: Helps to identify the source of bleeding from the Gastro Intestinal Tract.

Breast Specific Gamma Imaging is an exciting new development in nuclear medicine technology. This test employs radiotracers for the detection of breast cancer and has been shown to detect cancers which mammography may have missed.

Nuclear Medicine Therapies

Overactive Thyroid Glands and Cancer of the Thyroid can be effectively treated by administering fairly high dosages of radioactive iodine directly into the thyroid using nuclear medicine techniques.

Bone cancer patients are finding that nuclear medicine techniques are effective in reducing the pain associated with their cancers.
